Steven Ellison (born October 7 September 1983), who is better known under the screen name Flying Lotus or sometimes FlyLo, is an American record DJ, producer, musician, filmmaker, and rapper hailing from Los Angeles, California. Also, he was the creator of the record company Brainfeeder.
At the time, he worked at the pioneering hip-hop label Stones Throw Records. The album was released as his debut album, 1983, on the 3rd of October 2006. The album was instrumental in developing his unique creative style by constructing compressed spatial and Eastern hip-hop beats that evoked the Madlib sound and Dntel while showcasing from as early as the 70s Japanese proto-synthpop 60s jazz Harp.
The year 2008 was the year that saw Ellison begin a period of high productivity. Ellison completed the Los Angeles record with collaborative tracks featuring Samiyam and Gonjasufi. The album also includes an exclusive white label release with remixes (“Camel,” “Lightworks,” and R2-D2 sound effects “Shadows of Tomorrow” and “Promiscuous”) called Shhh!, and a set of LA-inspired EPs. The La EPs contain remixes and previously unreleased tracks from the Los Angeles Album. The third installment in the collection (L.A. EP 3) introduces a new style of atmospherics in his music.
In September of 2010, Flying Lotus released “Pattern+Grid World” The album is an 8-track EP that features Thundercat on bass and the art of Theo Ellsworth. The track Camera Day was used in the Killer Mike song swimming, released as part of the Adult Swim Singles Series.

This multi-award-winning Cosmogramma was a raunchy Afrofuturistic homage to hip-hop, soul jazz, and IDM but with more emphasis on a message of lyrical content that it had never had before an emotional grieving process. The album was supported by live instruments (Thundercat playing bass; Miguel Atwood Ferguson on strings, Rebekah Raff on harp) and live vocalists (Thom Yorke, Laura Darlington) – all chosen to communicate the musical roots from Ellison’s clan (Ravi Coltrane himself played the tenor Sax).
