After McKenzie’s Hamlet performance, Gale Edwards directed McKenzie as Joan of Arc in Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan. Edwards was the director for the Sydney Theatre Company at Sydney Opera House. Since the 1962 Zoe Caldwell production, Saint Joan was never staged in Australia. Edwards’ production was regarded as one of the “most revealing tests of an actor” and as “the male Hamlet”. McKenzie’s performance was unanimously praised: “This play stands on the performance by St Joan and McKenzie. She sets the stage ablaze from the moment she enters. McKenzie is a Joan to make theatre heavens rejoice… McKenzie gives us Joan in all of her innocence, ignorance and joyful goodness that seems almost to lighten her inside and, almost to the end, a youthful joy. Although her petite stature may seem pitifully vulnerable, she is strong and sturdy and a young woman who can perform intense, convincing actions. McKenzie’s Joan the Maid is always in focus. McKenzie’s waiflike appearance reveals extraordinary strength and an endless supply of emotion. It’s a Joan to encourage the timid among us to be independent and to listen to the voices within us. Shaw would have been surprised.
